Brief: The project seeks to explore how the notion of ‘controlled risk’ affects outdoor playgrounds and thus reflects how children navigate the urban environments they live in. Exploring modular forms of playgrounds and using materiality to reinterpret them. Paper clay made from scratch is used to shape the forms because of the different textures and imperfections it offers, which contrasts with the standardised playground equipment.

Concept: The main objective is to interpret various form elements from the playground while maintaining their original forms and features.

Part of this objective is derived from loose parts play that is associated with the target age group of ages 5-8. The purpose of loose parts is open-ended materials that children can adapt and move in different ways.

Approach (Why paper clay?): Making paper clay from scratch allows for different variations in texture depending on how much you shred the paper or knead the dough. This allows each individual piece to be different every time.
